Cortex - Le Preserveur

History

CORTEX is a company established from a partnership in Research and Development between PRETEUX BOURGEOIS SA, a specialist in the manufacture of corks for Still Wines, and BARANGE SA, a specialist in the manufacture of Champagne corks. These two companies have equal shares in CORTEX but remain independent in terms of their complementary involvment in the cork industry.

At its inception, Cortex had two main objectives:

- to finalise it research into a composite cork suitable for both Champagne and Still Wines.

- to complete the industrial development of this cork.

These objectives have been achieved.

The pooling of resources for Research and Development was facilitated by the fact that the two companies:

- work with the same material, corkwood, but use it differently, therby generating some useful technology transfert,

- have businesses which are complementary and not in competition,

- have a very similar culture due to their history and their positioning in the high quality and medium range cork markets,

- have a strong tradition in research and development.

It therefore came as no surprise that in 1997, following regular exchanges of technical information, the management of both companies identified a common area of Research and Development:

PRETEUX BOURGEOIS SA had worked on a barrier to prevent the problems of taste and smell associated with natural cork, BARANGE SA had been working for a year on the same subject.

In 1997, the two companies decided to pool their efforts in this field of research.

Technical Notes

1) The Cortex Preserver

The CORTEX operating principle consists of a corking system based on the combination of a natural cork and a moulded silicone element which is known as the Preserver.

2) Mechanical functioning

In terms of mechanics, the Preserver does not alter any of the conditions of the bottling or uncorking processes.

3) Techniques employed

The Preserver is positioned on a natural stopper which is ready to use. It represents an element of the wine corking system in its own right.

4) Taste and smell

The preserver, as a new corking accessory, has been designed to provide a barrier to cork taint.

5) Technical support from Sain-Gobain performance plastics quality of the new product

Saint-Gobain has played an active role for several years in the development of the Preserver project, working in close collaboration with the teams at Barangé and Préteux Bourgeois.
